If you already have a website, this is one of the easiest ways to earn money. Go to Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk or whichever is your local site, scroll down to associates then apply to join.

Presuming you are accepted, log in to the members page and go to “Build Links”. Select the type of products you wish to offer eg books, DVD, sports equipment etc. and search for something relevant. If you have a site aimed at dog owners, this might be relevant books, a DVD on dog training or pet accessories. Click on “Get HTML”. Don’t worry. You do not have to know HTML as the program holder has done the work for you. You will see a frame with the selected item and its current price and below that a box with HTML code. Copy the whole code ensuring you take every character in the code and paste it into a suitable place on your site. You may have to choose between edit text and edit HTML depending on the type of control panel you have for your site. Save the paste then open up your site in a different window, go to where you saved the code and check that the image appears as it should eg

You can add additional items whenever you want. Another option is to let Amazon pick suitable items on a theme. This is quite a good option because whenever new items are added in your chosen category, they will automatically appear on your site so it appears fresh to the viewer.

Whenever someone clicks on one of the chosen items and makes a purchase, an affiliate commission will appear in your Amazon account. There are various options for receiving payment, Paypal being the most universal.

To make sales, you will need to promote your site. If, for example, you already know lots of dog owners you could invite them to visit your site. If you do not have a ready made list, you will need to find buyers. One way of doing this is a PPC campaign (Pay Per Click). This is when you set up a campaign on Google Adwords or similar and search on potential keywords relating to your product(s). You then set a limit for how much you are prepared to pay per click on your ad. Some keywords in some niche markets may be very cheap whilst others with lots of competition may cost several dollars per click. There are some very good sites available with information on running successful PPC campaigns.

There is also a system whereby you can advertise on Google Adwords for free. I shall talk about this in a later posting. A PPC campaign will cost money but eg an investment of 50 $ could bring sales worth several times that amount so would be worthwhile.

If you do not want to invest any money, the most surefire way of promoting your site(s) is via writing articles and submitting them to article directories making sure that you tag them with keywords and give your site address. The article does not necessarily need to be on the subject of your product(s) although obviously if it is, potential buyers will find your site more quickly.

Every directory which lists your article will create a backward link to your site. The more links you have, the better will be your rating on the search engines. When someone keys in a search words relevant to your product(s), if your site appears on page 1 or 2 of the search engine’s listing, you have the highest chance of a buyer clicking through to see what your site is about. Remember that people are looking for information so the more informative your site, rather than a small hard selling piece of copy, the better your ranking on the search engines. This is the basis of the lengthy subject of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) but it is not necessary to understand more about this at this stage.
